In 2017, we travelled to New York for a commission at A/D/O in Brooklyn. We set up a mobile factory line, centred around a semi-industrial clay extruder.
Working in residence alongside Assemble, Will Shannon, Niamh Riordan and Mollie Anna King, over 2 months we created a range of experimental, extruded products to complete the building around us. A cladding of ceramic tiles was made for the facade, alongside planters, dinnerware and door handles. The products were made from a heavily grogged stoneware clay, dipped in a colourful blue slip.
We explored how one machine could be used as a creative tool on a production line aiming at endless variation. At the end of the project, we brought the extruder with us back to Granby where it continues to be used as an integral part of our production processes.
The project explored an alternative means of production: an itinerant factory which develops products onsite and on the fly, furnishing its surroundings and then moving on, transferring knowledge and equipment to its next location.
