Hand-glazed tiles are the first product range made from a low carbon, high strength devitrified ceramic invented by material research studio, Matter at Hand.
Handmade in Liverpool, fine fractions of UK household glass waste are combined with natural clays and minerals, then mixed and extruded into shape. Each tile is hand-glazed through a playful process in which colour is built up in layers using a fine mist, leaving soft-edged impressions that record the hand of the glazer.
The tiles are fired to 825°C in electric kilns powered by renewable energy, using a reactive sinter-crystallisation process that transforms the waste glass into a dense, durable ceramic with technical performance comparable to porcelain stoneware.
This lower firing temperature — around 400°C less than conventional ceramic tiles — reduces energy use by more than 50% in Granby Workshop’s production.
Every tile is unique, and together they create varied and overlapping surface patterns that subtly shift across larger surfaces.
Hand-glazed tiles meet the technical standards of EN 14411 Group AIa extruded ceramic tiles. Completely non-porous, they are suitable for a wide range of exterior and interior wall applications from external façades to kitchen backsplashes.
Originally developed as a low carbon exterior tile for the Fourth Corner — a new building developed by Granby Four Streets CLT, designed by Assemble.
